COMMUNITY

Lakota Language Project

Lakota? Want to help revitalize the language? If you do and plan to attend the upcoming Rosebud Casino’s 9th Annual Wacipi on July 4, 5, 6, 2008, please take part in the Lakota Bible Translation Project’s community checking effort taking place in the hotel conference room on all three days. Community checking is part of the tedious, but thorough, process the Project takes in translating scripture.

This process is just one of the many steps required before scripture translation can be published into print, audio or video. “Our language holds good instructions for being a good relative, being a good human being. While some Biblical concepts are challenging, Jesus’ teachings are a natural fit for the Lakota language.” said Rosalie Little Thunder, one of the three translators working with the Project. “The community checking step is to assure that the translations are understood by the most people. Come check it out,” Little Thunder added. During the event, translators; Deacon Ben Black Bear, Jr. and Little Thunder, both enrolled members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, and Jerry Yellowhawk, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal member, along with the Project’s linguist and scripture consultant, Jack Rushing, will be there to answer any questions, said Carla Rae Marshall, Project Coordiantor.

Marshall said they will set up in the Rosebud Casino’s conference room, located downstairs of the hotel on Friday, July 4th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday, July 5th, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and again on Sunday, July 6th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend and will receive two recently published audio/booklet CD sets called “Life In All Its Fullness” and “Gods Promises to You” for participating. Refreshments will be available. If you are interesting in participaing please either give them a call at 605-719-3012 or stop by while your at the Rosebud Casino’s Wacipi on July, 4th, 5th, and 6th.

If you can’t make this event, but are interested in helping the project, here are some ways that you can help: If you are a Lakota speaker, you can help with checking the translation drafts, working in a team, usually over a period of 2-3 days every few weeks. As a speaker, you can also check the translation drafts by mail and submit your suggestions for improvement. If you are not a speaker, you can still be a tremendous help by recruiting speakers and organizing translation checking sessions in your own community.

You can organize or help with fundraising activities to support the project, especially for community checking expenses. You can help distribute finished materials to Lakota speakers in your own community. The Project is always looking for ways that can enhance spiritual peace among relatives and for individuals and communities.

If you would like more information about the Lakota Bible Translation Project and/or would like to have some of their most recent translated scripture materials, please feel free to stop by their office at 615 Kansas City Street, Suite 1-B, Rapid City, SD 57701 or call them at 605-719-3012 or by email at lakotaiyapi@rushmore.com.
