Brown Bull to sign with Florida International on Friday
NCAA Division I Miami school is in Conference USA
KYLE – After seriously considering University of South Dakota in Vermillion, Little Wound senior 7’1” Nate Brown Bull has decided to sign a national letter of intent to attend school and play basketball at Florida International University, a school with an enrollment of 54,000 located in Miami, Florida. The formal signing ceremony is set for Friday, July 17, at 10am in the Little Wound School elementary auditorium.
“USD was really helpful, they sent an assistant coach down to Kyle, he helped Jay Jacobs and Nathaniel through the NCAA Clearinghouse process but in the end, this year all USD had was a guard scholarship, we would have been responsible for the cost of his first year,” said Norma Hernandez, Nate’s mother, “out of the blue, we received a call from an assistant coach from Florida International, Spencer Wright, who had seen Nate on You Tube, he was somehow able to track down his number through Amanda Carlow, Nate and I and his father Doogie Brown Bull were flown down to Miami for a visit, the 3rd week of June; it was an awesome campus, we visited the dorm, the campus, they have a student athlete academic center, they help with books, tutoring, they have special professors to help with reading, writing and math – the nervous part, it is so far away.”
Brown Bull finished off his high school career at Little Wound with a triple double, 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots, in a losing effort against Winner in the SD State A basketball tournament third place game in March at the civic center in Rapid City. It was a good year, we finished 20-5, took fourth in state, our goal was to win the state championship but I wouldn't change a thing, really happy with the season we had, happy we could get Little Wound back to state after an eight year drought; the Red Cloud game was my favorite and the first Aberdeen Roncalli game was the toughest, concluded Brown Bull.
“The visit to Florida was really nice, the facilities were great, the coach was really nice as well,” said Brown Bull, “they have everything set up for me, a work out plan, a development schedule, I just need to get down there.”
Florida International University, an NCAA Division I school, is a member of Conference USA, they have 400 student athletes participating in 18 sports. Last year’s men’s basketball team went 16-17 overall, 8-10 in the conference. Dennis Mavin, their top scorer at 17.2 points a game was a senior while their number two scorer, Adrian Diaz, a 6’11” forward who averaged 13 points and 6.9 rebounds a game will be back for his senior season. Schools in the conference include Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Mississippi, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Texas at San Antonio and Western Kentucky University in addition to FIU.
Brown Bull had his sights set on an NCAA Division I school. On the court, the Little Wound senior averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds a game, in the classroom he maintained a grade point average around a 3.0.
This next stage is going to take a lot of hard work, I’m ready for it, I have a passion for this game and I’m ready to really focus on the necessary steps both on the court and in the classroom, added Brown Bull, I just want to get on the court and start playing.
